Would i be able to teach an art subject in further education (years 12,13 uk) with an AS in fine art and a degree in BA(hons) Interior Architecture?

im currently in year 12 deciding on a university course for september 2024

Hi Noah thanks for your question. There isn’t a straight forward yes or no answer to this. To teach, most establishments would need you to have some sort of teaching qualification, but I have known friends who’ve joined further education through industry experience alone and then completed teaching qualifications in their workplace. I myself trained as a secondary teacher with a degree in interior design and a level 3/4 foundation in art. From my personal experience I found having completed the foundation art extremely useful as it gave me more than enough skills to then teach art at KS3/4/5. My design degree was really useful for teaching tech type subjects. I think if you go down a teacher training route, there’s enough to think about without also having to learn more about your subject. That said you may have more than enough transferable art skills from completing a design degree. A strong portfolio would also be useful to show what art based skills you possess.
