How can I start a business while in high school?

I'm 15 I want to start a crochet business but I don't know how to start.

Thank you comment icon Hello Robertha! Its so great that you have a passion you want to monetize! I would highly recommend looking into trade schools for other or similar skills that you can use your handy work for. You are very young, but that just means there is more time to plan and prepare. Online commerce has gotten significantly easier to navigate and so I doubt you need advice on platforms. I would just consider keeping an open mind for artsy-skill-trades that might more differentiate you from other at home crocheters.. Especially since you are almost old enough to get a work permit, I would advise you to try working for someone else before you really invest your time and energy into starting a business of your own. Good luck! Ela Elena Wyckoff

Hello Robertha! It's always a pleasure to connect with someone who shares a passion for crafting. To begin your journey, consider starting small. Are there any nearby craft fairs where you could showcase and sell your creations? Building a customer base can be challenging, but starting locally is an excellent way to gain traction. Additionally, ask your friends if they enjoy your work and if they'd be willing to spread the word about your crochet business!

Next up, social media! Instagram is perfect for showcasing your talents. Observe other crocheters and knitters on the platform, take note of the hashtags they use, and identify what attracts engagement.

Reddit is another valuable resource to explore. Subreddits like r/crochet, r/knitting, and r/YarnAddicts are great places to seek advice from people who have pursued similar goals. If you have a local yarn store (LYS), they may be able to offer support and opportunities to display your skills!

One crucial aspect to consider is pricing. Be sure to consult your LYS or Reddit for guidance on setting prices that fairly reflect the cost of materials and your labor. Remember, don't let anyone undervalue your time and effort!

Best of luck, and I hope this advice proves helpful!

Hi Robertha!

I would suggest the below 3 steps to help you start your own business.

1. You need to register your business with the Secretary of State (SOS). Most businesses register in the state where the business is actually located (HQ Address). At the same time you will need to decide the entity type for your business such as a LLC, Inc, LTD. Make sure you register with a state so your business can operate legally.

2. Come up with a business plan. This would include items such as operations, location, capital/funding, vision/mission statement etc. You can easily get lost in the weeds on this part. Don't get caught up in details that you can figure out later. Think big picture and ask yourself what is your business really trying to accomplish? That is always a good starting point on a business plan!

3. Lastly, come up with different business goals and set dates when you want to accomplish them. Setting a timeline will help you stay on track and know where you are in the process. It is very difficult but don't let yourself get caught up in the whirlwind of the "day to day." Meaning, set yourself and the business up with clear goals and do your best to not let the "daily fires" use up all your time. Inadvertently, you will have to attend to some of these daily fires but make sure you block off time to keep the vison of the company alive.

Hello Robertha!
You have gotten great responses already on this question, and I wanted to add some additional suggestions:
1) If there are any small businesses near your home, you could introduce yourself to the owners and ask them if they would be willing to host a "pop-up" where you could come in, set up a table and display your creations for an hour or two on a few different days. Small business owners are often supportive of others trying to start their own businesses, and this could be a great way to get more people to see your creations and meet you. Eventually this could lead to the small business carrying some of your products to sell.
2) Etsy is a great platform for creations like this. I would suggest exploring that as an option as well.
Best of luck with your endeavor, I am sure that you can do this! Wishing you much success.

To become successful in high school, it's important to prioritize your education and set clear goals for yourself. Make sure to attend all of your classes and actively participate in your coursework. Take advantage of opportunities to get extra help if you're struggling in a particular subject. Additionally, develop good study habits and create a schedule that allows for enough time to complete assignments and study for exams. Outside of academics, consider joining extracurricular activities or clubs that interest you, as they can help you develop new skills and meet new people. Finally, stay focused and motivated, and remember that hard work and perseverance can lead to great success.

Hi Robertha,

It's fantastic that you're eager to launch your own business!

First, focus on refining your crochet abilities and determining the specific products you'd like to offer (for instance, scarves, blankets, apparel, and so on).

When you're confident that your creations are ready for the market, try approaching a few classmates to see if they'd be interested in buying.

Additionally, harness the power of social media platforms (such as TikTok, Depop, and others) to showcase your designs! Employing hashtags like "crochet" can be an excellent strategy to attract potential customers.
