What degree focuses on the effects of drugs on the brain?
I want to peruse a career in neuroscience relative to drugs, either recreational or prescription, I’m not picky. What would be the best major to decide on for this field?

Hello Sydney!
There's degrees that focus primarily on research, science, and the mind - programs like psychology, chemistry, or neuroscience can work.
A neuroscience major is more specific towards the brain, so you could lean towards that option.
Both will likely involve grad school, since tackling drug recreation within the brain is a specific area that requires deeper study. If you can, find a bachelor program in neuroscience (or related), get started on undergraduate research, and look at grad school programs related to your goals. Some career paths you may want to take after college are neuroscience research or pharmaceuticals.
You can start your search with colleges on Niche! https://www.niche.com/colleges/search/top-public-universities/s/minnesota/
UofMN Twin Cities has undergrad degrees in psychology and neuroscience:
- https://majors.umn.edu/major/neuroscience
I know that UofMN - Duluth has graduate studies in pharmacy, which might interest you:

Hi Sydney, great question! The effects of drugs on the brain makes for a fascinating field. I have a few recommendations:
- Psychopharmacology: this is specific to the effects of drugs on the brain in relation to mental health, and mental illness. I'd highly recommend you look into this. You can find both undergraduate and graduate programs.
Other degrees/fields of study:
- Neuroscience
- Biopsychology
- Psychological and Brain Sciences
- Pharmacology
I hope this is helpful and I wish you luck in your studies!

Earn a Ph.D. in pharmacology, cell biology, and neurology. To do this, enroll in a graduate school focusing on neurology. Keep the language simple and straightforward.
