Hey Reya,

I was a Psychology major as well and I absolutely loved it! One of the majors I considered before deciding on psych, was Cognitive Science which combines things like psychology, neuroscience, and AI/computer science! As someone who doesn't understand how computers work, I immediately eliminated this as an option but it sounds like its right up your alley!

Kristen’s Answer

Hi Reya,

I studied communications and psychology in college and now work as a UX (User Experience) Designer. The psychology component helps me understand users and what they want better. As a UX Designer I don't develop or program websites or mobile apps but I work with the people that do. Having some knowledge in this makes communicating to them easier. I would look into internships in product management or UX to see if these fields are interesting to you!

From one of our Experimentation Program Managers:

What are the requirements to get into the tech field?

"Pursuing a degree in analytics, data science, web dev, or project management would be a good place to start. TBH, most roles involve some combination of each of those areas, so would recommend to take classes that cover each even if your final degree is focused on 1 discipline."

How can I combine psychology with computer science?

"Look into classes related to Behavioral Science (Behavioral science explores the cognitive processes, especially decision making and communication, through systematic analysis of human behavior.) This is helpful when developing new software, better UX for websites, product design and how to continually iterate and improve."

From one of our Senior Experimentation PMs:

"What are the requirements to get into the tech field?"
There are a few different paths you can take to work in the tech field. It's important to note that not all tech jobs require you to be a technical expert or an engineer. There are various roles available in tech companies, such as marketing, human resources, IT support, product development, and software development, to name but a few.

If you're interested in pursuing a career as an engineer or technical professional, it would be beneficial to take math/statistics and engineering courses. These subjects will help you think analytically and solve problems, which are crucial skills for engineers. Additionally, learning coding is important for both hardware and software development, so definitely learn coding. The good news is that you can even start now. There are many online resources available to learn coding.

"How can I combine psychology with computer science?"
Combining psychology with computer science is possible! You can take classes in behavioral science, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), and psychology to understand how people think and interact with technology. These insights can be used to create better websites, devices, and communications. Another role in tech companies that uses psychology and technology is as a user researcher, where you gather feedback and preferences from participants to inform the development process.

"When or how long would it take to get a job?"
The time it takes to get a job in the tech field varies. It depends on factors such as your skills, experience, and how well you showcase your interest and passion to potential employers - in your resume and interviews. Companies may have multiple rounds of screening and interviews, which can take some time. It's important to be patient and follow up with a polite "thank you" email if you haven't heard back within a week or two.

Remember, building a career in tech involves a combination of education, practical skills, and demonstrating your enthusiasm for the field. Keep learning, gaining experience, and staying determined!

Hello Reya, you're already on an excellent track towards a career in technology by acquiring software language skills and combining them with your business education. The tech industry is vast, providing numerous entry points for newcomers. Many tech firms prioritize candidates who can adapt and learn new technologies and skills quickly, as the field evolves rapidly, rather than those who only know specific technologies and are unwilling or unable to grow.

To begin narrowing down potential job opportunities that might suit you, consider selecting a few tech companies that interest you or where someone you know works. Then, explore the company's website and locate their "Career" or "Employment" section to discover the range of available positions and their requirements.

Additionally, some companies may feature an "Internship" section on their employment pages, so I recommend looking into those for further information.

Please keep me updated on your research progress!

Whitney’s Answer

Hi Reya! I think you are already on a great path towards getting into tech. I work in Tech Strategy Consulting which essentially means I help business figure out how to improve their technology or implement new technology. I had a business background before this and have learned tech skills on the job. This role is a good combination of business and tech, but also could have components of psychology since many of our projects are focused on meeting the end-user requirements or goals. So understanding human behaviors definitely applies!
