What skills will i need when in the IRS?

What abilities will i need to get my job done while working in the IRS or what skills would look good on my resume that well help me get the position to get the job?

Thank you comment icon Fantastic choice, Ryan! Being an Internal Revenue Officer for the IRS means you'll serve the nation as a skilled expert, safeguarding both the federal government and taxpayers. Your main responsibility will be to recover overdue tax accounts and obtain late tax returns. When applying, keep in mind that you'll need a full year of graduate-level education, along with a minimum of 15 semester/23 quarter hours in accounting. Additionally, you should have 9 semester/14 quarter hours in subjects like business law, economics, finance, tax law, or money and banking. Wishing you all the best! Mrinalini Singh

I recommend you check out USA Jobs (https://www.usajobs.gov/) and filter for positions at the IRS. That way you can see some of the qualifications that will help you prepare your resume. Federal resumes can be different than resumes you would use to apply for jobs outside of the government. USA Jobs has a helpful resume builder to ensure you don't miss any required information. Federal positions can be hard to get, so don't hesitate to apply to more than one, and keep applying even if you don't hear back initially.

For an entry-level job, only a high school diploma is needed, as the IRS will provide training. After college, required skills depend on your chosen field. Since you mentioned accounting, the IRS may find you a good fit. Consider an IRS internship during your senior year to gain work experience, making you a top candidate for future jobs. My mom, who worked at the IRS for 30+ years, provided this information.

Boost your accounting and analytical abilities, as they're essential for success! Make sure to master Excel, since it's a fundamental tool in this field.

Familiarize yourself with various tax laws and aim for internships at tax firms or even the IRS. Gaining experience as an intern in a state department can also provide valuable insights into the workings of government offices.
