Good question! Accounting is a great choice for a major. There are lot of career opportunities for accounting majors. I personally joined a public accounting firm after graduating. Since then I have worked in 6 different offices, and 3 different countries. It also work with many different clients in different industries and teams. I learn something new everyday, and always feel challenged and interested.

Accounting is a vey varied field. They are so many jobs available within the accounting banner, that it can be hard to choose later what you want to do as an accountant.
Every company needs an accounting department. You can be in any industry, as well as work in an accounting or consultancy firm.

Being an accountant helps you to understand how a company works and what the company does as well, as anyone might come to you to see if their idea is financial sound. You will know a lot of things that are going on in your company, because you will most likely be involved at some point.

Over the years, you can also change careers, because an accountant is in relation with every other departments within a company, and a lot of skills are transferrable.
I know people who moved from being in the accounting department to being in business management, in COO office and even one became an investment banker.

That is an interesting question. The accounting knowledge gives you the basics of understanding of how the company functions. For me, it was a great experience. The biggest issue might be being so far from the business side of the company and being involved in driving the future  might be difficult. The main reason for you to get involved in accounting is because its fun for you, while providing you a safe future job lookout. If not, you might try other departments. Don't forget that later, if unhappy, you can always change your role in the company, especially in bigger ones.

Joe’s Answer

What a great question. I took my first accounting classes in high school then went on to major in accounting in college and attained my CPA. I think what makes being an accounting major different are the skills you develop = specifically in the area of being analytical. These skills are transferable to many other areas of one's professional life. I spent 11 years at Deloitte as an Auditor then joined PwC in 2004 as a full time Faculty and taught the Assurance curriculum (accounting and auditing). I went on to get my masters from NYU in adult learning and made a career change into Learning & Development and have been in that field at PwC since 2004. Withing the L&D team I have served in many areas. Additionally, I was afforded the opportunity to work in Slovakia for a year and did a tour in our NYC office for 4 years. Essentially, I think the skills you develop with accounting provide for future growth in multiple areas and there is always something new to learn. Hope my story helps to answer your question.

Emily’s Answer

Accounting is different from other majors because it provides the platform for a career, as opposed to just a job. A background in accounting enables you to be involved in multiple different industries depending on what interests you.
