Hi Olivia,
This is great question and I wanted to build a bit further off of Blakes response above. While going through school it maybe worth considering to add a second major or minor in information systems, if you have the capacity in your schedule, to support your accounting degree. The reason being is that accounting is a industry that is evolving over time just like most other industries and is being influenced by IT. Accounting processes are becoming more automated in nature throughout different companies. Now with that said it does not mean jobs are being replaced. It just means that the responsibilites of the accountant is changing and a deeper understanding of IT and accounting systems will help you excel in the profession.
Hope this helps!
Best,
Joe

Great question! According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics - Employment of accountants and auditors is projected to grow 11 percent from 2014 to 2024, faster than the average for all occupations. In general, employment growth of accountants and auditors is expected to be closely tied to the health of the overall economy. As the economy grows, more workers should be needed to prepare and examine financial records.
The accounting job field seems pretty healthy right now and I don't personally know any unemployed accountants. While advances in technology may impact several careers in the coming years, I think there should be plenty of accounting jobs in the foreseeable future, though there will continue to be more of an impact on utilizing accounting technology and consulting.

I believe accounting and Financial Control are key for a company to survive, so there would always be jobs in accounting.
You might see that some of the work will become more automatic or that low added value roles will be offshored in cheaper locations, but overall I think accounting is one of the fields that will always be recruiting.
