How do I figure out what job would be best for me I am going in to tenth grade and still have some time, but I want to be prepared. I love helping people and my mom is a home health nurse, which is something I am interested in but she always has so much work and seems stressed. I want to be able to help people and enjoy it.?

I completely understand. I am a medical doctor and wanted to people. It’s not what I expected and I even wonder if I picked the right job. You never really know.

I think you need to try externships. If you can follow a nurse and then you can see what they do. If after a summer of doing this and if you don’t like it this is not the job for you.

Talk to your mom. What does she like and dislike about her job? Every job has pros and cons.

The good thing is that any job you pick you can learn something and you can do something else. For example I know doctors and nurses that now teach or work for pharmaceutical companies or do clinical research.

One thing I’ve learned in life is that what I’ve had planned for my life isn’t always in alignment to what God or the spirits above have for me. Whatever decision you make you will be ok. You cannot go wrong with the medical field but just know it will be hard. Everything worth while is hard.

Write down what it is that you enjoy doing. Do you like working with the elderly or children, do you want to work in a hospital, home care or assisted living facility? Maybe the emergency room? You said that you like helping people and do home care. What is it about it do you like and don't like? Would you like to work in the emergency room or would you want to study for physical therapy? Look if your school offers any college courses that you can take in advance of going to college. Do you know what school you want to study at? What does each course cost? Do you have to go part time and work? Can you pay for the future classes?

There are lots of jobs that will allow you to help people, but if you are thinking about working in the medical field, then it might be helpful to talk with people who already do. Try to expand your discussions beyond physicians and nurses to include jobs like radiation technologists, lab techs, respiratory therapists, physical & occupational therapists, and paramedics & emergency medical technicians. You may also want to consider other areas that may not be a first consideration like insurance companies which also tend to pay well and let you work remotely. All of these roles would allow you to work in ways that are helpful to people and some will have less stress and perhaps allow you to have more balance in your life.

There's no shortage of need for people in the medical field and this need exists in almost all roles. But do some research and see if something sounds like it will be a good fit for you before making a decision. You never know what might catch your eye or peak your interest.
