Hi there,

You can be a singer from today until the day you die. I sing as well as work in the marketing world and have been for many many years. There are many places to sing and many opportunities to get your voice heard. Don't just look at the TV and the radio stars. People sing at amusement parks, with private companies, with choirs at church and in the community, on stage and off-camera. Focus on being the best singer you can be, not on being a star. Stars fade and fizzle. A true artist will be an artist for a lifetime.

Good luck!

Honestly, if you're singing, you're already a singer. If you're looking for an answer more along the lines of how long it takes to make a living as a professional singer- that depends on a lot of factors, but it's generally not a super short road. I've worked as a professional singer as well as in tech.

The best things to do to keep you on the road to becoming a successful singer are to keep taking lessons, keep performing, and keep practicing. Audition for all kinds of things to build audition skills and make connections. Be willing to travel, record, work crazy hours, and doors will likely open a little sooner. With a little talent and a lot of hard work, you can definitely carve out a living for yourself (but fame is fickle, maybe don't set your sights on that as a goal).
