Hi Natasha,
I'm not as familiar with the retail space but based on my experience most jobs in that industry will need to be in-person, especially as many companies are returning to the office. That said, there are lots of resources for students and young professionals interested in social media marketing to pursue internships. I recommend the following:
1. Get involved on your campus / your community. Join organizations related to your desired industry; for example, Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA). Many campuses also have clubs related to journalism/PR/marketing/communications, like local magazines, or student agencies.
2. Many people in our industry who find a lot of success also start out at an agency to get a wider variety of experience with various clients. It's a great way to learn a lot in a short amount of time to build your resume. Look for internships in social media/communicaations at PR agencies and other companies you're interested in (e.g. retail companies for fashion PR agencies). The organizations on your campus may also host networking events with representatives from these companies so you can connect with them and put your foot in the door when applying for internships. Some companies also host "intern for a day" or other shadowing programs that are great ways to gain experience and learn about the industry. Talk to your campus advisor so they can help you indenfity companies and internship programs.
3. Be persistent and don't give up. Many in our industry apply for up to 20 internships before securing one that is a good fit. Think of the process as a journey where you learn something from each interview experience even if the role doesn't end up being right for you. It will all point you on the right path for the perfect role, and all you need is one yes. :)
Best of luck! Always happy to answer any other questions / share more about my own experience in social media marketing.

Hello Natasha,
I suggest you begin by noting down the companies you encounter in your daily life, especially those whose social media marketing activities resonate with your values and interests. Doing so will help you compile a list of companies that you can keep an eye on over time. Once you feel confident in your studies, you can reach out to them with your knowledge and ideas. I hope this advice proves useful. Best of luck! 😊

Hi Natasha, I would echo Tina's answer but also add that networking and finding someone who is already doing the job you're interested in could be a huge help. Most professionals are always happy to have quick phone calls or to have someone shadow them to learn what a "day in the life" is like. Reaching out and asking questions is never a bad thing, and the more you can learn, the better you'll be when you get the chance to apply and interview!
