What is a career as a accountant like?

What is the typical schedule and responsibilities like in a day in the life of an accountant?

Thank you comment icon Depends on if you got stuff you need to do. You would like to prioritize the higher priority tasks or smaller tasks first. Get those over with then tackle the big fish. That's typically my day. We really don't have a schedule per se. In terms of responsibility, you just got to do what you are asked. Nothing really is out of scope in the real world. Ching Poon

Madi’s Answer

Hi Bree,

The life of an accountant can differ significantly based on several aspects, such as the size of their firm, their specific field like audit, tax, or forensic accounting, and the clients they handle, among other things. For example, accountants specializing in tax might have designated periods during the year when they put in extended hours to meet filing deadlines, while other parts of the year might be more relaxed.

Wesley’s Answer

Hi Bree,

The schedules and responsibilities can vary greatly. In my experience accounting jobs primarily fall into two major groups Private and Public.

Private accountants typically work for a single company as an accounting employee. There job might include preparing monthly reports and journal entries. This role would normally be expected to work your normal 9-5 and have a very predictable workload.

Public accountants typically work for an accounting firm and will work on multiple clients. This work could include Audit, Tax, or Consulting work. The projects and work are often very client to client. In this role you might be expected to put in extra ours to meet client deadlines.

PwC’s Answer

I wake up at 6am. I check my work email and hedge fund before I put on makeup and drive to work. Work is work. I am challenged everyday by either the problems or the client. The workflow comes and goes but my heart always remains for accounting. By this time it is 6:00pm, I hit the weight room because I am a working athlete.
