Hi Raul,

Nursing schools look for grades but they also look at you as person. They need to know why you want to become a nurse and what is your vision, so you better have a good answer :). In addition, if you did any volunteer work related to patient's care or any community service, it will be your plus as well.

There are some similarities in the qualities nursing schools look for in candidates, but there can also be unique things at each school. Most schools look for students with strong GPAs and good communication skills. Some schools may ask for letters of recommendation and evidence of writing abilities (for example the ability to write a quality essay). Depending on whether you want to go to an associate degree or bachelor's program may also impact what qualifications the schools require. There are also accelerated nursing programs that are available for students who already have a degree and, therefore, can progress through the nursing program more quickly if the candidate has already worked in another field.

Nursing school look for excellent grades but also whether you have had any volunteer or paid experience in the field. I would highly recommend getting involved by volunteering at your local hospital or with any group affiliated with providing health care services. You could look at senior centers, summer camps for kids with special needs. It might help to ask you guidance counselor how to find resources in the area that you live.
