Hi Lukas,
It is best to apply early in the Fall semester for an internship starting the following summer. Companies typically open applications between the months of July and September with offers coming in early Spring. If you are not yet sure where you want to apply, it is a good idea to search on websites like LinkedIn for internships that align with your educational background and career goals. The earlier you start looking for opportunities, the more time you will have to tailor your applications to the companies' mission and culture. When going through the interview process, it is important to do research on the company on LinkedIn or the company's website so that you can embody their values and demonstrate your interest in them.
Good luck!

Make sure to apply as early as possible for the best chance at success. Typically, companies post summer internship openings around July-August of the year before (for example, August 2022 for a 2023 summer internship). They do this because they receive a large number of applications and need time to determine which candidates should proceed in the selection process. Interviews can be time-consuming for recruiters, so they usually take place in late fall, with offers potentially being made in December or early spring.
This timeline allows for the necessary onboarding steps, such as answering security questions and providing personal information to set up training and pay (if applicable). To truly stand out as a candidate, research the company's goals and values, as well as the recruiters, using resources like LinkedIn. Demonstrating your genuine interest in the company and alignment with their mission will help you shine as a top contender for the internship.

Companies often recruit interns (internship jobs will be posted to their website or other job sites like Handshake.com or Indeed.com) in late Fall term (Nov-Dec), but some will continue recruiting into the early part of Spring term (Jan-Mar). Starting your application process early is a great strategy, as it allows you to have more options when choosing the perfect internship!

Whenever you are free. It is best to apply when you can't think of a productive thing to do at that moment

My experience has been that employers start recruiting in late summer/early fall for the following year's summer internship. My current organization will start posting jobs in August, with peak recruiting in September-October, striving to have all open internships filled before Thanksgiving break. Good luck!

Hey Lukas! Many companies begin their hunt for technical talent in the Fall, around September. For non-technical roles like Sales and Marketing, recruiting usually kicks off in January. If there's a specific company you're drawn to, it's a great idea to regularly check their career page or join their talent network, if they have one. This way, you'll always be in the loop when new internship opportunities arise!
