If I am going to be a high school senior this fall, should I consider shadowing or interning for an accountant throughout the year or should I wait to do that in college?

Hello,

Finding a local internship is a great idea! It gives you experience and furthers your knowledge of Accounting. By locating an internship that will allow you to shadow you could get a better understanding of Accounting making it easier when you do start college. Having experience and internships also gives you a better advantage over others when you start applying for a career after college.

Good luck!

Ka’s Answer

Participating in an internship is an excellent method to gain experience in a specific job or career path. You can begin this opportunity during the second half of your final year in school. At this point, you will have finished all your college application tasks, and there will be no further steps in the college acceptance process.

Working in accounting can be a seasonal role, mainly focused on tax procedures. By shadowing professionals during the first part of the year, you will witness the most hectic period in the field.

Madisyn’s Answer

Hi Nicole,

Participating in an internship during high school can certainly boost your college application and provide valuable experience to help you decide if a career as an accountant is right for you. However, rest assured that high school internships are not mandatory for pursuing a successful accounting career. Many individuals, including myself, have had their first internships during college.

Wishing you all the best!

Michael’s Answer

As a high school senior, you may be starting to think about what your future holds and what career path you want to pursue. One way to gain valuable experience and insight into a potential career field is through internships.

Internships are short-term work experiences that allow students to learn about a particular industry or profession. They can provide hands-on experience, help build a professional network, and give students a better understanding of the skills and knowledge required for a specific job.

Here are some reasons why internships are important for high school seniors:

1. Gain practical experience

Internships provide an opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills you have learned in school to real-world situations. By working alongside professionals in your chosen field, you can gain practical experience and apply what you have learned in a hands-on setting.

2. Build your resume

Having an internship on your resume can demonstrate to future employers that you are proactive and eager to learn. It can also show that you have some experience and understanding of the field you want to work in.

3. Get a foot in the door

Many internships can lead to full-time job offers after graduation. By interning with a particular company, you can get your foot in the door and make connections within the industry.

4. Develop professional skills

During an internship, you will have the opportunity to develop key professional skills such as communication, teamwork, time management, and problem-solving. These skills are essential for success in any career field.

5. Explore your interests

Internships can help you gain clarity on your interests and passions. If you are unsure about which career path to pursue, an internship can help you get exposure to different industries and see what types of work you enjoy.

As I believe you should do it if the opportunity presents itself, internships are a valuable experience for high school seniors. They can provide practical experience, build your resume, help you make connections, develop professional skills, and explore your interests. If you are considering an internship, seek out opportunities in your area or through online resources and make the most of the experience!

Hi, Nicole,
My recommendation is to focus on your schoolwork, extracurricular activities, volunteer activity, and your friends. Your priority in your senior year is to position yourself well for college acceptance. A good time to shadow might be the summer after your freshman year.

Great question! It's great to see that you're eager to get started on your career and knowing what you want to do. I would recommend perhaps shadowing someone for just a few days, most accounting firms only hire college students as interns. Shadowing could really help you get a better idea of what accountants do on a daily basis before you apply to schools and declare your major.

PwC’s Answer

Hi Nicole - Your question reminds me a lot of myself when I was your age/ in your position. I co-oped my senior hear and while it was a great experience, I undoubtedly missed out on a lot of experiences that you only have in high school. You will have plenty of opportunities for internships and co-ops in college, and your ambition that you show makes me believe that you won't have any problems getting one. Enjoy your last year of high school, focus on your schoolwork, and treasure the experience, because you will never have another one and you will have plenty of years to work.
