Jim’s Answer

If you are trying to become a classical musician, then yes.

If you are working on being in a band, a singer, a dj etc. Experience is more important than your major. Music Theory will always help, and being in school for music will give you a wealth of networking opportunities, but it won't guarantee you a career in music.

Practice your craft constantly, share your music with others for feedback, engage your local community and support local artists. This will turn into opportunities to play shows, and as your skills and brand grow you will gain more opportunities.

I hope this helps

Depending on your interests (voice lessons, guitar, drums) then you figure if you want to learn theory, business and or sight-reading and etc. I would suggest, knowing what your passion is that you really enjoy doing. Best of wishes 🌟

The music department is like any other, at least in most colleges. When you visit the college (which I recommend), talk to the professors there. A music degree requires a primary instrument (or voice), courses in several other instruments generally, plus theory and some related subjects. At the end of your first semester, the professor may advise you of your potential and suggest next steps for you.
