Volunteer time at your local zoo, if they allow it. In some cases, they have small community zoos that will always accept volunteer help. Speak to the vet there and get their opinion on the best way to get into vet school and what courses to concentrate on. There are a couple of fields in veterinary medicine such as pathology, surgery and other field similar to human medicine except here you will be learning about several species and their different physiologies vs human and only one type of physiology. In many animals there are certain enzymes that humans do not have. Also, one simple thing is that many features of animals are different from humans. Such as the normal body temp for human is 37 degrees centigrade or 98.6 F, whereas in pigs it is 38 or 100F and in cats it is around 39 degrees centigrade or 102F. So there are many differences in species. Some vets only work with large animals such as horses and some with small animals such as cats or dogs and some with exotic animals.
