James Constantine’s Answer

Hi Breonna,

Your college essay should be around 500 to 750 words, depending on the specific requirements of the college or university you are applying to. It is important to carefully review the essay prompts and guidelines provided by each institution to determine the appropriate length for your essay.

Here are three authoritative reference titles that support the answer:

1. "The College Essay: A Guide to Writing an Effective Essay" by the College Board. This guide provides detailed information on the structure, content, and length of college essays, as well as tips for writing a successful essay.
2. "The Common Application Essay Guidelines" by the Common Application. This guide provides specific guidelines for writing the essay portion of the Common Application, including word count limits and tips for crafting a strong essay.
3. "Writing the College Application Essay" by the Harvard University Graduate School of Education. This guide provides comprehensive information on the college application essay, including tips for writing a compelling essay, examples of successful essays, and advice for revising and editing your work.

Remember, the length of your essay is just one aspect of a strong application. It is also important to focus on the content, structure, and overall quality of your essay, as well as the specific requirements and guidelines provided by each college or university.

Rian’s Answer

Hi Breonna,
Most college essay's have a word count that they expect you to strictly adhere by. Your personal statement normally has more flexibility, with a wordcount of about 600-650 but college specific essays tend to have word counts no more than 300. These wordcounts exist in order to make sure students are writing in a manner that is concise, but still clear on what they are trying to answer.

Good luck!

Good question. You will find out that there will be multiple essays you will need to write. The main essay is between 250 to 650 words. Admissions officers read a lot of essays, so getting to the point is important, but more important is writing a compelling story. 250 words is not enough. If you can write 500 words concisely you are in good shape.

I recommend writing more than 500 to start, to make sure you tell your story. Then edit it down to the best parts.

There are other essays as well.

Why this major essays - Usually about 250 words. (at least 200 words)
Why this school essays - usually about 250 words as well. (At least 200 words)

Hope this helps.

Good Luck

Most essays will have a word or character limit listed. I encourage you to get as close as you can without going over the limit. If they don't, look at what the essay is asking for. If it's a story, it's likely to be longer, but if it's asking for what you would do is X situation, it's likely to be 350-500 words.

For a basic outline, aim for 350-500 words or about a page and a half in 12 point Times New Roman font.
