Following steps to becoming a Radiologist in Illinois?

Hi! I am a college student interested in becoming a radiologist and interpreting images (I'm not too familiar if there are specific radiologists so this can be a broad question).

I am currently completing all of my prerequisites needed to apply to my schools 2-year radiography program but I am not sure where to go from there, what route should I take? Am I making the right choice with the radiography program?

Also, if there are any internships or programs available it would be much appreciated!
Thank you!

William’s Answer

A radiologist is a physician that interprets images, so if that is the route you want to go then I would skip the Radiography program and start medical school. If you want to be a Radiographer, the person who actually creates the images, then the 2 year Radiography program is the way to go. From that program alone (at least in my state, check your local rules), you can do CT, MRI, Cath Lab, and Diagnostic X-ray (which includes Fluoroscopy, Surgery, etc). You can go back for a Bachelor's degree, but it typically only creates a pathway to management and offers no extra monetary incentive in almost all cases. Good luck on your journey!

Wendell’s Answer

Hi Marlene,

I would agree with William. In order to interpret radiology studies as a radiologist, you will need a Bachelors degree and then apply for 4 years of medical school. This would be followed by 5 years of residency. Its a long road, but I love my job, getting to experience almost every specialty of medicine. Responsibilities can range from mostly surgical as an interventional radiologist, or just interpreting studies at a reading station, or somewhere in between. I currently work from home, reading studies remotely. Some prefer the busy environment of a teaching institution or private practice.

Good luck in your pursuits! ~Wendell (teleradiologist for Imagen)
