There are many excellent medical schools in the south! An important point to remember about applying to medical schools is that you must cast a wide net, no matter how strong of an applicant you may be. The reason is that these medical schools receive such an incredible number of applications that it may be very unpredictable which schools offer you a spot in their class versus not. Since this is not predictable, the best strategy is to apply broadly and then consider visiting the schools that offer an interview and/or a spot in their medical school class.
There are various ranking systems for medical schools, but the most important criterion in choosing one is how well it fits your interests and needs. If you are committed to the south, there are many excellent medical schools including but certainly not limited to the University of Virginia, University of North Carolina, Medical University of South Carolina, Baylor College of Medicine, University of Florida, University of Alabama Birmingham, and many more.

There are some really great options around and everyone you ask in that field would tell you why theirs was the best. But most of them applied to a few initially and you should do the same. See where you get accepted and maybe visit the schools. I will say that where I’m from, people speak very highly of chapel hill.
