Kara’s Answer

To be eligible for the Nursing Boards you must have attended and graduated from a certified nursing program. They have a 2 year associate degree at some junior colleges.

You must have the needed clinical hours on the floor. You should get this in school, however check with each state to make sure you meet the requirements.

You must have all of your vaccines to work in nursing.

Most hospitals will have an Nclex review course for new grads. Study with a group of people by reading questions from the study guide.

Good Luck!

Tonya’s Answer

Thank you for your questions.

Congratulations on your interest in becoming a nurse.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) (2023), and from my experience as a nurse and midwife, “Nursing encompasses autonomous and collaborative care of individuals of all ages, families, groups and communities, sick or well and in all settings ” (https://www.who.int/health-topics/nursing#tab=tab_1, page 1).
You have the opportunity to make a large impact on patients, their loved ones, and the communities you can serve.

Please note, as I answer your question, I noticed you identified your location as Nigeria. As a result, the answers I am providing are resources in Nigeria.
The first step to passing the exam is to identify the requirements to sit for the exam. You can visit the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (see links below) for requirements and resources. Your next step is to acquire an outline of the exam and types of questions, which nursing school faculty can provide as they prepare you to practice as a nurse. You should identify your learning style to help you focus your time. Identifying your learning style by asking yourself; how do you prefer to study, alone or with a group or both; do you prefer reading or listening to materials or both; do you use flashcards to take notes or do you prefer audio notes. As you self-identify your learning style and think of when you have been the most successful in your schoolwork, this reflection can guide you in studying for the exam. Then, you need to commit time to study. This means, until you pass the test, you are going to give up something to create focused time to study. Do not give up eating, sleeping and having a little fun with people who love and encourage you because these activities are healthy for the brain to create positivity for studying.

Your second question of qualifications before becoming certified, I would lead you to nursing faculty in Nigeria. If you contact the Nursing & Midwifery Council of Nigeria, they can provide you with additional qualifications. As I previewed the website, I noted the application to take the nursing / midwifery exams includes additional criteria to apply, please review the information.

There may also be additional qualifications you need before applying for a nursing position/job. You can contact the locations you are considering for your first nursing job to inquire about qualifications. Then you will be proactive in preparing yourself to achieve the qualifications to place on your job application and resume

All the best to you as you prepare for the nursing profession and the opportunity to care for others.
