How does being a child psychologist affect you mentally?

How do you cope with hearing horrible things kids go through if you are a child psychologist/therapist? I have considered this career path quite a bit, I am just worried I would not be able to handle it all.

Hi Gracie, it is perfectly ok to want to help people and set limits for yourself. Child psychologists can specialize in a range of problems. They support children who have difficulties with friendships, are coping with a major life change, have experienced a trauma. Some of these areas may be more emotionally charged than others. Find what interests you within the field and if you are passionate about it, you can gain the tools you need to take care of yourself too.

Through training in graduate school and beyond, often with the support of a supervisor, psychologists learn to empathize with their clients. Listening to challenging stories can be draining; knowing that you can help is also rewarding. Psychologists are trained in a variety of theories and techniques to help children change their lives for the better. They help people become empowered, in addition to listening to their troubles.

Psychologists need support too. As a psychologist, you can find a professional community of colleagues who understand. Reaching out to a therapist when you feel like your personal life is getting in the way of being there for other people can be a good idea too.

In short, psychologists are more than professional listeners. They can help people make the changes that they want/need!

Vilash’s Answer

Every aspect of life can influence your mental well-being. As a child psychiatrist, I constantly remind myself that while hardships are a natural part of existence, my mission is to assist children in managing these difficulties and eliminating any obstacles obstructing their growth. I acknowledge that life has its ups and downs, but I firmly believe in the possibility of positive outcomes.

My approach involves identifying the core of their problems and addressing them through various methods, such as therapy, medication, or family counseling. It's crucial to consider the entire family unit, as the ripple effects of trauma often span generations. Parents aren't inherently flawed; they simply may not be aware of what they're missing.

It's fascinating to observe that when a strong, positive connection is established, individuals become more open and capable of change. This transformation is not only possible, but also highly achievable.

Gonzalo’s Answer

The mind is a very fragile and fundamental part of being human. The Psychological evaluation at a short age can be beneficial, but some attachments and conflict of emotions can be some risk factors. I believe the way that Psychology in children can effect your mentality is the constant work and interaction you put on children.
