In union construction drywall is split among 2 different crafts. Carpenters install the studs and drywall and drywall finishers apply the tape and joint compound. Typically the metal studs are installed with screws and a screw gun is used as well as powder actuated nail guns to attach into the cement floor. The drywall is then screwed to the metal studs with care being taken to ensure that screws are stopped just before they break the surface. A mud crew will follow along taping the joints and covering screws. Typically 3-4 coats of joint compound are applied and allowed to dry in between coats and are also sanded smooth. Hope this helps.
