What counts as experience?

From what I was told I have none and that experience is only gained by working a professional job is this true? If not what are some ways I may have already gained experience?

Erickah’s Answer

Hi Chelsea,

You can also gain work experience through volunteering and internships based on your interests. You can volunteer at your local fire station, hospital, school, or church. Make sure to document the hours and the person in charge for it to be a reference on your resume. Volunteering or working in a job-like environment will give you the feeling and the experience you need. Although it's volunteering, treat it as a job because that's how jobs check your accountability and how reliable you are.

1. Include relevant activities such as volunteering, summer jobs, internships, and work experience in your resume.
2. Highlight life experiences where you've used critical thinking, teamwork, conflict resolution, communication, and team collaboration. These can provide an additional advantage.

Burde Prerana’s Answer

Continue to learn, progress in your career, and make valuable contributions to society. Engage in internships, complete your coursework, take on side jobs, work under guidance, conduct research, and participate in roles within clubs and organizations. These actions will help you grow and succeed.

Joe’s Answer

Internships, part time jobs and volunteer experience would all count. Often times even roles or tasks that may appear to be unrelated would involve the same skill sets and experience.

Jordan’s Answer

Hi! I agree with the above answers that experience does not need to be in a just a professional job. You could have experience with running a marathon or playing a division 1 sport. Anything that was significant in your life an taught you a valuable lesson will be a good experience to highlight as you go through interviewing.

James’s Answer

Hi Chelsea,

From my experience interviewing for companies, internships, side projects, part time jobs on my resume counted as experience when they were able to provide skillsets the recruiter or interviewer wanted to see.
