How to pick what you want to do a PhD in?
How soon should I know what I want to do as a PhD? Right now I am a second year sophomore with no previous research experience though I hope to gain some over the course of the fall and spring semester of this upcoming year.

Pursuing a PhD is indeed a significant investment of time. However, don't let this discourage you. Consider participating in research internships, either during the summer or throughout the semester. This will give you a taste of what it's like and help you determine if it's the right path for you. If structured internships aren't available, don't hesitate to connect with your university professors. They might be in need of research assistance, and this could be a great opportunity for you. Keep up the good work, and remember, every step you take is bringing you closer to your goal.

Waiting until after you have your Master's degree is best to decide your PhD course. There are many things you may discover, learn, and work on across your undergraduate and graduate education. These may change what you think you want to pursue. Right now, you have everything to gain by exploring as many opportunities as possible with research and internships.
