Jonathan has shared a lot about the equipment paramedics use in the field, but the tool I found myself using most was a simple stethoscope. Many services offer basic or mid-level stethoscopes for their staff, but I quickly realized the importance of having one that allows clear hearing, even in the back of a bustling ambulance. When I was starting, I spent on the best stethoscope I could manage to buy (after testing numerous ones), and guess what? I still own it after 30 years. My wife even uses it daily.
While medical tools will keep changing with time, the need to listen to the heart and lungs will remain constant. Your assessments will shape your treatment methods, so it's worth your time to research and test various stethoscope models. Find the one that best suits you in the diverse settings you'll encounter during a typical shift. Trust me, you won't regret this investment.
