How do you get your first job?

I’m entering grade 12 and still haven’t had my first job. I don’t know how to get one.

Hi Kailey! To make it simple, you will need to develop an entry-level resume or get an adult to help you, and use it to put in online applications for entry-level jobs that you would be interested in.

If you aren’t planning on attending college, you can apply for county government jobs, retail jobs or jobs in the restaurant industry. These are typically the easiest to come by for teenagers and young adults.

You also have the option of volunteering (if your parent or guardian approves) in order to gain professional experience and build your resume in the field of your choice. You can even volunteer remotely! If this is of interest to you, you can sign up on Volunteer Match (it’s free) and submit your interest in some of the endless opportunities available. The American Red Cross is also a great place to volunteer to get some professional experience.

If you intend to go to college, I recommend focusing on that (be sure to participate in extracurricular activities and clubs if you can along with striving for the highest GPA) and then during your senior year, complete an internship that aligns with you major (career industry of choice) just before you graduate, and then once you have graduated, you can use your new college degree and internship experience to start your career.

You’ve got this!! :-)

Jerome’s Answer

If you have a guidance counselor, they may be able to recommend student friendly employment. My school had a program where I was able to work as a mentor and read to kids in elementary school. It wasn’t much money, but it was a start.

Food service is typically easy to break into. It can be tough work, but an easy point of entry.
