If I were to become a registered nurse how many years do I need to be in college or university?

Hi, my name is Zainab! I am currently a senior at high school and I was wondering If you can answer my question. If I were to become a registered nurse how many years do I need to be in college or university?

Thank you comment icon Hi, Being a nurse is a very fulfilling and rewarding career choice. I would recommend going for your BSN. A lot of the leading healthcare systems that are Magnet certified look to hire mostly if not all BSN prepared nurses. It is also required for a lot of your certifications, it can lead to better pay and career advancement. Sandra Sims

Hi Zainab! What an awesome achievement to reach your senior year!! Typically in most U.S. states, to become a registered nurse (RN), you must earn a two-year associate degree in Nursing (ADN) or a four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). Exactly how long it will take you will depend on the degree program that you choose, your clinical experience and the licensing requirements in your state.

There are multiple ways to become a nurse! Depending on state requirements, your educational goals, and ambition! Licensed practical/vocational nurses are typically one formal year of education. They function similar to registered nurses with some restrictions. Registered nurses have a 2 or 3-4 year degree depending on whether you want your entry level to be associates or bachelors prepared education. There are also practice based diploma programs and some teaching hospitals offer accelerated programs to earn a diploma for an RN in as little as 9 months! You can further your degrees depending on other areas of interest as well including administration, informatics, nurse practices, nurse anesthetist, teaching, etc. So many possibilities!

Marlena recommends the following next steps:

State Board of nursing
Texas tech university
Covenant hospital school of nursing
Nursing informatics
Accelerated nursing degree
