I'm not a doctor, but I do work with them, if you love helping people , go for it. But find an economic way (some med Schools are outside the US and may be more economic.)
If you are going for the income make an informed decision and speak to all doctors and surgeons.
A few a have expressed and advise not to become one.
There is a lot of red tape to deal with, some surgeries they make no income from it, surgeons always run the risk of being sued, (malpractice insurance on that is high).
Plus you deal with a lot of miss/uniformed or worse non compliant patients everyday!!
Or you can't really tell them the hard core truth, or they will get mad at you. People who go to the e.r for small things ( insurance is changing that and that's why you see more stand alone emergency clinics).
So one can say the bearing of responsibility outweighs the benefits.
If you want to stay in medicine, try physician assistant or nurse practitioner ( but you will still have malpractice insurance.)

Helping people is why many people choose medicine as a career path. You should also consider other clinical careers that help people such as nursing, pharmacy, and physical therapy among others. Most of these careers allow people to work directly with patients and their families to help them stay or become healthy. I chose to work in health research so, although I don't work directly with patients, I have the opportunity to improve how our health system works which also helps people.

Wanting to help people is a great motivator! But just so you know, being a doctor isn't the ONLY way you can help people. If you like healthcare, you can also be a nurse, medical social worker, pharmacist, therapist, occupational therapist, physical therapist, speech-language pathologist, physician assistant, nurse practitioner, etc. If you want to look outside of healthcare, there are a thousand other ways to help people as well.
Becoming a doctor is a long, difficult path that can definitely be worth it if you have enough motivation, but, as anyone who actually is a doctor will tell you, you will need to find a few more reasons than "I like to help people" if you want to persevere through all the schooling and experiences you will go through as a doctor.
