The best way to find out is by joining an EMT group on facebook. This one is an active group: EMT/Paramedic's Study on Facebook and there are more. You can narrow your search by city and state if you want. When you do join the groups, introduce yourself, let them know what you are considering and ask your questions. Do not be afraid, you can learn a lot from the facebook groups. As far as actual experience, some paramedic companies allow people to ride along for the shift on a volunteer bases to get the experience. You just need to call your local EMT and ask if they have a volunteer ride along. Good luck and wish you the best.

Lisa’s Answer

I am not an EMT or a paramedic. However I can tell you it is a busy and intense job. They are the first responders to any situation and often times they put their own life on the line to save someone else's. It is challenging also because they have to sake split decisions, and be able to ride in a rocking box (EMS unit) and try not to get car sick. Typically they are stationed in a fire department. In Indiana, they work 24 hours on and 48 off.

Lisa recommends the following next steps:

You might contact a local fire department and ask to speak with an EMT/Paramedic. I am sure they would love to discuss their job with you. Good Luck. Lisa

With any job, it’s important to weigh the pros and cons. While being an EMT is very stressful at times, and is very constant with work load, it is also very rewarding relationship wise, and knowledge wise. I’d definitely start researching EMT courses near you, and start asking questions about things you are curious about. EMS is a perfect way to legitimately help people in some of the worst times of their lives, and gives irreplaceable memories/experiences in Medical Care.
