Help me with what I should do in the future

I am 14 years old I'm in 9th grade. I would love to learn about nursing and cosmetics. How would I start learning about nursing or cosmetics? What age do you think is the best to start studying about nursing or cosmetics? Why did you get in to nursing or cosmetics? So can you help me with what I should become in the future.

Julia’s Answer

Hi Itzel, I am not part of the nursing or cosmetics industries within my profession, however, there are things you can do in high school to get a headstart on college and your career. Firstly, speak with an advisor at your school and discuss your interests. Ask if there are classes you can take that will give you college credit, so that when you get to college you may have the opportunity to bypass certain classes and get ahead of your requirements. Second, start preparing for the PSAT, and even the SAT. You will likely have the opportunity to take the SAT multiple times later in your highschool career, and anything you can do to begin preparations early will be helpful in the long-term, such as working with a tutor or acquiring practice exams. Lastly, get involved in extracurriculars and volunteer work. Anything you do in high school you will be able to add to your resume when applying to college, and increase your chances of getting accepted into any programs you may apply into. Best of luck to you in your future Itzel, it is important to also remember high school will go quickly, so be sure to make time for fun with friends and family along the way!

Julia recommends the following next steps:

Speak with an advisor about college-credit courses
Begin preparation for PSAT/SAT
Get involved in extracurriculars/volunteering

If you are interested in a career in nursing now is the time to start thinking about it. You could try volunteering at your local hospital. They used to be called candy strippers but I’m not sure what they call them now. Discuss with your guidance counselor next steps as far as education. Are there any programs that teach nursing assistance? That’s how I started. I am now a Nurse Practitioner with a doctorate in Nursing Practice. I got there gradually but can pursue almost any path that I choose ( and I have done many) with additional training. I haven’t done cosmetics but have considered it and would only need a few weeks of education to be able to be certified. In other words, once you have your RN, you can take any path you like. Some of those In cosmetics take other routes such as estheticians but I’m not familiar with that process. IMO nursing gives the opportunity for great versatility through out your life.

Marlena’s Answer

Itzel, great questions with lots of possibilities! Nursing is fabulous option with many avenues! Pediatrics, babies, laboring moms, older adults, medical, surgical, emergency, intensive care, infection control, management positions, education, public health, mental health, research, informatics, and so much more. Traveling is a great option to make money, see the country, gain experience in different areas. Funny enough, if you like cosmetics and nursing, lots of options to combine the two! You can be trained and certified to do fillers, botox, open your own practice, work for a practice, permenant makeup, etc. Both careers are very good but require different schooling options. Check with your high-school counselors as many highschools partner with local colleges to start you off on your career path in beauty or nursing :-)

Marlena recommends the following next steps:

Nursing school
Cosmetology
Esthetics
High school college programs
