Hello, Maria !
Although I am not a medical doctor or a medical professional, I had always thought that if I were to go into medicine, I would choose Dermatology as a specialty. The skin is our largest organ and so many things can happen to it directly or as a symptom of an underlying illness. So this aspect of medicine most likely is what doctors find challenging in a good way. Skin is also the organ on our body that we and other people see, so there is an aesthetic aspect to it, too.
I can only imagine what Dermatologists like most about their work. To begin with, all Dermatologists are medical doctors. Medical doctors go into that work because of the serious nature of wanting to allow people to know what is happening in their bodies and finding solutions to help them feel better. Easing pain, clearing up a rash, diagnosing and prescribing something that will change a person's ailment. We all reach out for help when we are not feeling well and doctors are there for us. So dermatologists are a huge part of this and the sense of educating and helping patients along is the most gratifying, I imagine.
I would also imagine that the variety that any specialty offers, including dermatology, is also something that they enjoy. No two days are alike and no two patients are alike.
One of the things that all medical doctors like is that, depending on when they can do it, they can open their own office or clinic where they are in charge. You can work for a medical company for years and than decide that you've advanced far and go into practice for yourself, especially as you get older, but at any time you feel the time is right.
I won't go too much into the potential incomes, but most doctors I know are happy with their salaries and income. So earning potential is a definite "like". Keep in mind, though, that income for dermatologists greatly varies based on practice location, self employment, employment at a small or large hospital, etc. But it is a very satisfying way to make a living, I'm sure.
Another thing I think doctors like about their job is the continual education that they go for, conferences, trainings on new things in the filed. Seeing progress in methods, medications, devices, tools, etc. is another aspect that I believe doctors like. They like to keep up with the times and latest developments.
With dermatology specifically, I think one of the most rewarding things would be to see the happiness of patients when their ailment has finally cleared up. As a culture, we are very conscious of how our skin looks and dermatologists probably feel very rewarded when they see positive physical change in a patient that leads to the patient's emotional satisfaction.
I hope that this has helped you to think more about a career in Dermatology and I wish you the best !
