Hi Nat,
The first step is to identify what's important to you. Consider factors such as the distance you're comfortable traveling for college, your preference between staying in a dorm or commuting, the amount of financial aid you anticipate needing, and the kind of coursework and campus activities that spark your interest. By defining these criteria, you'll be able to narrow down your search to colleges that align with your preferences and aspirations.
Best of luck!

A good college is all dependent on what is right for you. Here are a few steps that might help!
1. What am I interested in?
Once deciding what you are passionate about, look up what schools have that study.
2. Does this school have enough variety of degrees where if I don’t like my starting major I have the ability to switch?
3. Comparison of in state tuition schools vs. out of state
4. Are there scholarship opportunities for me?
5. What is the culture of the school like?
There are a lot of good YouTube videos that generally show the school from a students perspective. Take it all with a grain of salt, but it’s great to see from a similar situations perspective to you
6. Where do their alumni work?
Do they have a lot of alumni in places you could see yourself working?
7. What is the acceptance rate?
Acceptance rate doesn’t necessarily judge how good or bad the school is, but can help provide an idea of if you have a good chance at getting in.
8. Clubs and activities on campus
Does the campus support what you are passionate about and do you have the opportunity to explore many different experiences
Overall the right school will stand out to you. But hopefully a few of these tips can help you get started!

Hello, Nat !
Even though you do not mention what you want to major in, which is very important in selecting a college, it may be good to know about the different ways people select where to go, but many times, it is based on the school having a strong department in the subject that a person is going to major in. I hope that I can be of some general help.
My advice would be to look into local colleges in your area first. This way, you would have a convenient opportunity to visit the campuses and get a feel for the environment. If you do not have an interest in attending school locally, you will also have to make a relocation plan. You will also have to decide whether you want to go to school for an Associates or Bachelors degree. The University of North Carolina at Charlotte is approximately 90 miles from you. Winston-Salem is about 62 miles away and Carolina University is located there.
You will also have to figure in cost and what you are planning to spend.
You don't need to know what your major will be in order to choose a college, though. That's just one of the things people consider when looking at colleges. Just go with your preferences and what is important to you and most likely you will find a perfect fit.
Best wishes in exploring colleges and I hope you choose one that you will like very much !
