What would you say is the best part of being a Nurse Midwife?

I'm curious to see what experienced midwives have to say is their favorite/best part of their job.

Good morning,
Great question. I feel that the best part of being a midwife if the bond that you make with the mother to assist her in bringing a beautiful baby into this world.
But, you must know yourself. You need to know when to call for help.
I am a family nurse practitioner working in an urgent care. I need to think outside the box, but I also need not to be so prideful and think of the best information needed for the patient. Sometimes I need to refer them to the emergency department and not keep them in the urgent care wasting precious time. You start with the worse case scenario and then start ruling things out.
I agree with Michele text, that you need to do your homework and search your heart to find out if this is right for you.
I hope this helps and good luck with your future endeavors.

I love your question because it is very rare and it is a field of work that many people are not familiar with so I hope I can support your interest and give some advice. As you already know, Midwives are nurses, so to start out with, one goes to nursing school for an ideal foundation. However, there are several different types of midwives and some are not nurses.

I am not a Midwife nor a medical professional but I want to contribute so you will have something to think about. I think that the number one best thing if you become a Midwife is that you assist in bringing life into the world ! A truly amazing job ! I also think that as a Midwife another plus is that you get the chance to educate your patients and, as a result, they will know what to do. In addition, you learn from your patients, too.

Another thing that I think is very positive about being a Midwife is that you get to be a social and emotional support for your patients. You can detect things that they may need and facilitate the provision of such things as needed benefits, information or any services. Another plus is that after working in this field and having experience for some time, you can than train and teach young, aspiring Midwives. It all seem like a most positive profession with lots of personal satisfaction and reward.

I would like to suggest that you watch a TV series from England called, "Call the Midwife". It is a superb production about Midwives in the East End of London from 1959 till the late 1960's (so far). I am an avid viewer of this series which depicts universal situations that transcend culture or time periods and shows what Midwifery is all about, and of course character stories along with that. It is aired in the U.S. usually with a show in December and begins the season in March. You can watch some of it on PBSs' website (link is below).

I also want to share a video with you of a current American midwife who shares her story about Midwifery. I will provide a link to this amazing, inspiring video below.

I hope that this has helped a little and that my suggestions can be inspiring to you. I wish you all the best in your possible career as a Midwife.
