Convincing your mom to support your passion can be a delicate and challenging task, but it's possible with patience, understanding, and effective communication. Here are some tips to help you in this process:
Understand Her Perspective: Try to understand why your mom might be hesitant or opposed to your passion. Is it because she's worried about your future, safety, or financial stability? Knowing her concerns can help you address them more effectively.
Research and Plan: Show that you're serious about your passion by doing thorough research. Understand the opportunities, challenges, and potential paths related to your passion. Having a well-thought-out plan can make your case more compelling.
Communicate Clearly: Have an open and honest conversation with your mom. Explain why your passion is important to you and how it aligns with your values and goals. Be clear and specific about your intentions and how you plan to pursue your passion responsibly.
Highlight Benefits: Emphasize the positive aspects of pursuing your passion. Explain how it can contribute to your personal growth, skill development, and happiness. Mention any potential career opportunities or transferable skills.
Address Concerns: Listen to your mom's concerns and address them respectfully. Show that you've considered the risks and have plans in place to mitigate them. Be prepared to compromise or adjust your plans if necessary.
Share Success Stories: Find examples of people who have successfully turned their passion into a career or have achieved success while pursuing their interests. Sharing these stories can inspire confidence in your mom.
Offer to Compromise: If your passion involves risks or uncertainties, be willing to compromise. You might agree to pursue it part-time while maintaining other responsibilities or set specific milestones for reassessment.
Demonstrate Responsibility: Show that you are responsible and capable of managing your time, finances, and commitments. This will help alleviate your mom's concerns about your ability to balance your passion with other responsibilities.
Seek Supportive Resources: Look for mentors, teachers, or organizations related to your passion that can vouch for your commitment and potential. Their support can carry weight in your discussions with your mom.
Be Patient and Persistent: Changing someone's perspective takes time. Don't get discouraged if your mom doesn't immediately agree. Continue to demonstrate your dedication and responsibility over time.
Show Gratitude: Regardless of the outcome, express your gratitude for your mom's concern and love. Let her know that you value her opinion and are willing to consider her advice.
Give it Time: Sometimes, parents need time to come around to the idea. If your initial conversation doesn't go well, give it some time and revisit the topic later.
Remember that the key is to maintain open and respectful communication with your mom. While it's essential to pursue your passion, it's equally important to maintain a healthy relationship with your family. Ultimately, your mom's concern likely stems from her love and desire for your well-being, so approaching the situation with empathy can go a long way in gaining her support.

Hi Tiana,
Don't worry about the situation: I am sure your mom just wants for you to achieve the best in life. But the problem is that success is perceived quite differently by people. Try to be constructive, and bring enough arguments to disagree. Bring examples of fashion designers who are very successful, even more luckier than some doctors. Also, try to explain her in detail why you are interested in fashion design and why it will be a better career path for you.
Anyway, sometimes it is impossible to convince one's relatives/family members to change their mind and opinion. In that case, do you have enough courage to disagree? Your major and future occupation is very personal, you should start and end your day related to that, so you should love it in the firstplace to succeed.
Also, you can remember cases from the past when your mom disagreed with others and followed her passion anyway (if applicable.) It will help her better understand your situation and share your feelings.
I wish you all the best and great success in your desired field!

Hi Tiana, I can relate to your situation as I experienced something similar when I was leaving high school. I initially enrolled in a science program at a university, but after a year, I shifted to a different university to study Fashion Design, all without informing my family. Understandably, they were quite upset. It's hard to alter someone's perspective, but it's worth noting that the fashion industry offers numerous opportunities for a lucrative career. Perhaps, demonstrating to your mom the financial security you could achieve in this field might help her warm up to the idea.
When it comes to the skills and resources needed to break into the fashion world, I'd like to stress that it's no easy feat. You need to truly love it and have a genuine passion for fashion. The fashion industry is always on the move and you'll experience this firsthand when you start participating in extracurricular activities in college such as fashion shows and volunteering at these events.
Hone your computer skills, specifically in areas like Photoshop, sketching, and sewing. Remember, the sky's the limit. Maintain your focus and let your heart guide you.

Hello, Tiana !
This is definitely a situation that one must go about delicately and with much forethought. I would be happy to give you some advice on this. I don't know much about your situation, such as your age, but I will try to give you something to think about.
Choosing between the commitment of medical school which you do not want and being a fashion designer, which is your passion is much easier without interference, but it can be done even if there is some conflict. I don't know if you can change your mother's mind, but maybe work on making her feel more comfortable about it. The problem is, you will need her support once you enroll in a college.
I have found that sometimes, if you don't say much about it or make it a debate, things work out in your favor. Maybe once your mom realizes the cost of medical school on top of undergrad tuition, she may change her mind. Engage in your fashion designing now and show her all of your creations. Any triumphs, awards or good grades you get at school connected to design, show her that you are already a success in this work. Let her see you immersed in designing and even make something (a dress or shirt, etc.) for her. She will have to get used to it and hopefully she will see that you haven't any interest in studying to be a doctor. She may realize it won't work out if you're not interested. So this advice is: actions speak louder than words. If you argue with her, the only thing accomplished is feeling emotions. That doesn't change anything.
My mother was kind of confused about me going into acting. How I did it was I said I was going to be a writer and that's what she thought, even during my first semester of college ! I was in acting and very active with my major and when I graduated she was still confused that I got my degree in Theatre and kept asking what job are you going to get with that degree ? It turned out that my first position out of college was in professional theatre !
So, sometimes, these situations evolve to your favor. Like all life's challenges, it's a process. Make subtle comments to your mom about your disinterest, but nothing that will trigger an argument. You know her best so you can gage what you say and how you say it.
I also want to tell you that when I was in college, I had a classmate who was a foreign student, focusing on Puppetry as a theatre major. His parents wrote him and said that they will no longer support him (financially) unless he changes his major from Theatre to something else. He decided to stay with his passion in Theatre and managed to complete school on his own. I always found that very inspiring and it takes a strong person to do that. You are strong and you can do it too !
I do hope that this has been helpful and I encourage you to continue with fashion design for a really awesome career !

Honestly when you have your own money and own place, your parents' opinions don't have any impact on your life. You choose to do what you want to do. To make yourself happy, that sometimes means letting down your parents. I did what my parents wanted me to do and feel I wasted not only my early career, but also got into college debt for a degree I don't even use now. And trying to become a doctor when you don't want to is a way bigger waste of time and money than most other occupations.
Find a college that will set you up for success in the fashion field. Their website likely has lots of information on the success of their graduates. That might help convince your mother, however, remember that it is your life and not hers.

Thanks, can't wait to put this advice into action!
