Getting ready for medical school calls for a solid grounding in science, analytical thinking, and effective communication. Although the exact requirements may differ from one medical school to another, there are certain classes that are generally beneficial in equipping you with the needed skills and knowledge. Here's a recommended list of high school classes to contemplate on for a head start in your medical school journey.

Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, English and Communication, Anatomy and Physiology are all crucial. You might also want to explore Advanced Placement (AP) or Honors Courses. Health Sciences are another excellent subject area to delve into. And remember, Foreign Languages and Extracurricular Activities can add a unique edge to your profile.

A balanced education is key, so while you're honing your science and math skills, don't overlook other areas like humanities and social sciences. Medical schools appreciate candidates who exhibit empathy, teamwork, and a comprehensive understanding of societal matters. It's wise to investigate the specific prerequisites of the medical schools you're eyeing. This way, you can customize your studies to fulfill their requirements.

Hi Samaya! This is a really great question! I would check with your school's guidance counselor to see if there are any current medical programs that are offered. For instance, here in Florida the school's offer what we call the Medical Magnet Program so throughout high school classes are based on the medical program and field, There are also options for dual enrollment which allows students to go to both high school and take additional classes at a community college. In the medical field there classes like anatomy, AP biology, AP physics, AP chemistry etc.

Good luck to you, definitely reach out to your school's guidance counselor and don't walk away with out all the answers to your questions!

Paul’s Answer

Focus on all your areas, but the best preparation for the pre-med courses, school requirements, and the med school entry exams will be in the natural sciences courses. This.means your biology, chemistry, and other concentrations in this area.

Scott’s Answer

Hi Samaya! There are no specific courses you need to take in HS to prepare for medical school. It would however make sense to take some science courses to see if that is where your interest lies. Taking more difficult classes such as honors or AP classes may help you get into college, but other than those suggestions I don't think there are any particular classes you need. I would discuss this with a guidance counselor as well. Taking classes that you find interesting outside of science can also be helpful in that you might find another topic that really piques your interest.
Good luck.
