Dina’s Answer

Psychologist here 👋

In the United States, psychologists are doctoral level professionals who are trained in understanding the human experience. There are many fields within psychology. Some psychologists are researchers who study topics, such as memory, group dynamics, and mental disorders. Other psychologists provide therapy to individuals who are experiencing emotional distress. In order to practice therapy, psychologists must have a doctoral degree in clinical, school, or counseling psychology.

The average salary for psychologists in the United States is approximately $81,000 per year. This amount ranges quite a bit depending on the type of work and institution (university-based researcher, private practice therapist, hospital employee).

Being a psychologist is rewarding, as I get to help people learn about themselves and accomplish goals that previously seemed impossible.

If you are interested in learning more about psychology, there are many online resources. I’ll share a few that are my personal favorites!

I think Dina's answer covers most of your questions accurately. If you're asking what to study in college, it's a good idea to take an Intro to Psychology course, to get a sense of all the different fields within psychology, and which ones might interest you. You can do things related to psychology, like being a counselor, research assistant, or case manager, if you have a bachelor's degree. But to be a researcher, a clinical psychologist or an educator, you need an advanced degree. If you want to apply to doctoral programs someday, then definitely take some undergraduate research methods and statistics classes, and try to get experience in a research lab. If you are interested in providing psychotherapy, you can do that without becoming a licensed psychologist -- you can get a master's degree and then pursue a license as a marriage and family therapist, social worker or clinical counselor. To prepare for those master's programs, you will want to study some psychology, sociology and/or anthropology, ethnic or gender studies, and get some field service experience.

Salaries vary but are generally competitive. To enter the field, you need an undergraduate degree in psychology, followed by a graduate degree (master’s or doctoral) and licensing.
