Marlena’s Answer

Biology is part of your pre-requisites but if you want to dive deeper, absolutely! You can also do psychology more in depth, nutrition, informatics, forensics, etc. There are so many more opportunities today than before! Good luck and keep working toward the goal!

Marlena recommends the following next steps:

Nursing research
Forensics nursing
Nursing informatics
Legal nursing

Jazhel’s Answer

Hi Lindsay!

All of these recommendations are great and any of them will serve you well as a minor. Another option is to check for certificates that your school may offer especially in health services administration or management. This will broaden your opportunities in the health field. Talk to your advisor about possible certificates that you can incorporate into your program. I wish you all the best!

Michelle’s Answer

Hello, Lindsay !

I would like to give you some ideas on this wonderful plan for your college studies !

In addition to the great advice already given here, I would like to suggest minoring in social work, sociology or psychology. The reason I suggest this is because many nurses I have seen and have interacted with in hospitals for my former clients have been Case Managers. I have also had the occasion in my work to interact with psychiatric nurses, too. I also have known some nurses that retired early and became Social Workers.

I also think that minoring in Gerontology would be awesome ! I took a Gerontology class (okay, it was in the previous century) and found it greatly valuable because it was a phase of life that I hadn't reached yet. The course was more sociological than medical, but I think it would help you with a certain segment of patients. The next good minor would be Education. You may find that you will be asked or want to teach other nurses one day. If you think working in a private doctors' office, a private clinic or as a private contract nurse, you may consider a Business minor. You may even want to one day open your own Home Health Aide/Nursing Agency. There are so many options !

I hope that this has been helpful. Best wishes at school and in all you do !
