Paul’s Answer

There could be opportunities in nursing homes and elder care clinics.

Most nursing internships in larger public clinics and hospitals, are utilized by university nursing programs.

But, I would look into local nursing homes in your region.

Hi, Jolina!

I, too, am happy to hear you may want to pursue nursing! Volunteering at your local hospital is a great place to start in high school to see if you like the pace and being around sick people.
Another thing that may be a possibility is checking with your family doctor to see if it is possible to shadow a nurse in their office. We do this in our office at times with high school students. The nurses, nurse practitioners, and nurse really enjoy this. It is a chance to show a student what they do and tell them why they do it.
Good luck to you!

It fills me with joy to hear about your desire to pursue nursing! If you're curious or keen to discover if nursing is the right path for you, I'd suggest exploring volunteer opportunities at your local hospitals or nursing homes. Your school counselor might also have information on potential volunteering positions for you. As you approach the age of 17 or 18, consider looking into courses for Certified Nurse Assisting (CNA) at local vocational or technical schools. You could then gain experience by working as a CNA during your first year of college. After completing your fundamental college or nursing courses, you might want to seek an externship - a unique opportunity some hospitals offer to nursing students before they graduate. These steps could prove to be beneficial if nursing is indeed your passion. I wish you all the best and eagerly anticipate the day I can call you a fellow colleague.

It's fantastic that you're thinking about pursuing a career in the medical field, and exploring internships at your age is a great way to gain valuable experience. Here's how you can find good internships associated with nursing:

1. **Start with Your School**: Check with your high school's career counselor or teachers. They may have information about local internship opportunities or can guide you on how to find them.

2. **Hospitals and Clinics**: Contact nearby hospitals, clinics, and healthcare facilities. Many offer programs or volunteer opportunities for high school students interested in healthcare. Express your interest in nursing, and inquire about any related positions.

3. **Online Job Boards**: Websites like Indeed, LinkedIn, and Internships.com often list internships for high school students. Use specific keywords like "high school nursing internships" to narrow down your search.

4. **Volunteer Organizations**: Look into organizations like the Red Cross, hospice centers, or nursing homes. They might have volunteer programs where you can gain exposure to patient care and nursing.

5. **Networking**: Talk to any family friends or acquaintances who work in healthcare. They might be able to connect you with opportunities or provide insights on where to look.

6. **Professional Associations**: Some nursing associations have programs or resources for aspiring nurses. Even if you're in high school, reaching out to them for guidance can be helpful.

7. **College or University Programs**: Some colleges and universities offer summer or pre-college programs for high school students interested in healthcare. These can provide valuable experience and insights.

8. **Scholarship and Grant Programs**: Explore scholarship programs that might support your goal. Some scholarships offer opportunities to shadow nurses or work in healthcare settings.

9. **Online Courses**: Consider taking online courses or certifications related to nursing or healthcare. These can enhance your knowledge and make you a more attractive candidate for internships.

10. **Prepare a Resume and Cover Letter**: Even for high school internships, having a well-prepared resume and cover letter can set you apart. Highlight any relevant coursework, extracurricular activities, or volunteer experiences.

Remember that at 15, some opportunities may be limited due to age restrictions, but there are still valuable experiences you can gain. Stay persistent in your search, and use this time to learn as much as you can about the nursing field. Your curiosity and determination will serve you well in the future. Good luck!
