To become a licensed cosmetologist in the United States, you typically need to complete a state-approved cosmetology program and pass a licensing exam. The specific training requirements can vary from state to state, but here's a general overview of what's typically involved:
1. **Cosmetology School:** Most states require you to graduate from a state-licensed cosmetology school or program. These programs can vary in length, but they often range from 1,000 to 1,600 hours of training, which can take approximately 9 months to 2 years to complete depending on whether you attend full-time or part-time.
2. **Curriculum:** In cosmetology school, you'll receive training in a variety of beauty-related subjects, including haircutting, hairstyling, hair coloring, skincare, nail care, makeup application, and salon management. The curriculum is designed to prepare you for the licensing exam and to work as a competent cosmetologist.
3. **Hands-On Practice:** Much of your training will be hands-on, allowing you to practice your skills on mannequins and real clients under the supervision of licensed instructors.
4. **Licensing Exam:** After completing your cosmetology program, you'll need to pass a state licensing exam, which typically includes both a written and practical skills test. The exam assesses your knowledge of cosmetology techniques, safety, and sanitation procedures.
5. **Continuing Education:** Some states require cosmetologists to complete continuing education courses to maintain their licenses. These courses help you stay updated with the latest trends and techniques in the industry.
6. **State Requirements:** Be sure to check with your state's cosmetology board or licensing agency for specific requirements, as they can vary considerably. Some states may have additional prerequisites, such as a minimum age, high school diploma or equivalent, and background checks.
7. **Passion and Creativity:** Beyond formal training, having a passion for beauty and a creative mindset can be invaluable in this profession. Cosmetology often involves working closely with clients to help them look and feel their best.
8. **Professionalism:** Building good relationships with clients and maintaining a professional demeanor is essential for success in the field.
Remember that cosmetology is a regulated profession, and obtaining a license demonstrates your competency and commitment to providing quality beauty services. Before enrolling in a cosmetology program, research the requirements in your state, choose a reputable school, and be prepared to invest the time and effort required for training and licensure.

Hi Emma:
Educational Pathway for a career in Cosmetology :
One needs to earn a high school degree or a general educational development (GED) before pursuing Cosmetology school. Cosmetology school is around 12 months at a private beauty school. At these schools, a number of hours are required to complete. According to the American Association of Cosmetology Schools (AACS), the national average of required hours is between 1,400 to 1,600 to depending on the state where the school is located.
An Associates Degree can be earned at a community or technical college. This will take two years to accomplish. In either scenario at a private beauty school or at a community or technical college, there are costs involved for the programs, hands on training, etc. Cosmetology costs can be up to $20,000+ for tuition, books, fees, supplies, etc.
When considering a Cosmetology program, several things need to be researched:
- The Cosmetology program is state approved, especially for licensing.
- Program reviews will need to be considered from alumni and current students.
- Programs are checked for high rates for graduation.
- Career placement after graduation
- Financial assistance for the Cosmetology program
- Hands-On Training and Apprenticeship Programs
- Continuing education opportunities after graduation
Hope this information helps and best wishes for your career in Cosmetology!

Hi Emma,
I’m Katie, a licensed cosmetologist in Florida with two years experience in esthetics.
I’m not sure which state you’re in, but the training is completely mandated by the state. You have certain hours to complete, specific services, and tests for your license. I would do research on those and see how old you can be to go to cosmetology school and get licensed. In Florida it’s 16 years of age. Also, check several schools to find the best price of tuition. A lot of cosmetology schools can be expensive, over $20,000 and you may not get specialized training.
My advice is to take your time and do research! I did a lot of that before making my decision.
I hope this helps!
