Christina’s Answer

Not all journalists have to be outside, some like myself gather data and resources to make a point. Journalists have to be activists because much of the media on television is driven by corporations and corporate-based narratives. In my community, we have a term for feel-good stories about a disabled person without addressing other issues like discrimination and lack of accommodations, we call it Inspiration P**N because it might inspire people but it does it on the backs of disabled people. The same goes for stories of some rich guy swooping down out of an ivory tower and saving a school, Willy Wonka and A Christmas Carol come to mind. Yet sadly this happens in real life, especially in the education sectors of policy and politics like the Bill Gates Foundation. As both an activist and journalist I want people to be aware of the dangers of toxic competition in all education and media like Dance Moms or America Got Talent.

Hi Bethany! For me, the best part of working as a journalist is all the knowledge you acquire on the job. As a journalist, you should know a bit about everything, unless you're specializing in one area. And have options can drive you to different fields, amplifying your carreer vision and your possibilities. The out of office work will depend of your job or role in a company, if you are a reporter, for example, you will probably need to go out to follow the facts, interview people, cover diverse events and political changes, and for all of this you need to be in field. But you can also work with production or content creation and stay in the office. You can work with a press office and have a more internal work or even like me, as a content author, mixing communication with technology to manage content. So the flexibility and possibilities are the best part of work as journalist, and it will depend on what you want or what you like best.
