Thank you for your question. I am glad to hear that you are interested in graphic design and would like to be an entrepreneur.
Below are my suggestions :
1. Have you thought about what industry would need graphic design, e.g. advertisement, product package design, web design, etc.
2. Suggest you take the graphic design courses and management courses
3. Work as the graphic designer in some industries some time to understand the business model and logistic
4. Start the graphic design business online first if possible
Hope this helps! Good Luck!

Hi Samantha! This is a great question, and it's awesome that you're thinking about starting your own business!
To get started out of college, I would really recommend that you work at a company (or at a couple of companies) who specialize in graphic design. This way, you can learn a lot from how those businesses run, and decide what you like or don't like, and use that knowledge to get a better idea of what kind of business you want to run. You'll also learn a lot about the industry itself -- the tools that are popular, how to effectively work with customers, how to handle difficult conversations, and more. There's a lot you'll want to learn in terms of real-world experience before starting your own business. But once you have some years of experience under your belt (and hopefully a handful of valuable connections!), you'll be set up for success running your own business!

The two best resources I have seen for helping to get a business started are Dave Ramsey's book EntreLeadership and this workbook (https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/bc/content/ldsorg/topics/self-reliance/2017/14678_sgmb_book_eng.pdf?lang=eng)

I'd encourage you to reflect on which Graphic Design challenges you're particularly good at tackling. It could be beneficial for you to see how other graphic designers present their talents to clients, to get a feel for the industry norms. Starting off, you might want to research Graphic Design teaching institutions in your local area and make connections with the career office and faculty members.
As you continue to expand your knowledge through more classes, don't forget to make the most of your teachers and career guidance offices. They can help you navigate both formal and informal professional networks that exist in the field.
Moreover, gaining some hands-on experience (perhaps as an employee or intern) and gradually building your portfolio will be incredibly useful. This will allow you to gain a deeper understanding of the profession's various facets.

Hello there!
It's fantastic to see your proactive spirit and desire to kickstart your own business. I'd like to share a few insights to help you grasp more clearly the essentials of achieving success.
You will need to be good at graphic design. This one is probably given, but you will need to be able to produce good work.
You will have to do your own accounting. This involves how much you're making, the taxes that you'll have to pay, and creating the legal entity
You will have to get your own business. This refers to the fact that you'll have to find people to pay for your work. Suddenly, it's not just about graphic design, but you have to find people that requires graphic design as a service. This would involve some degree of being comfortable with sales.
My personal advice here would be to spend some time in similar work space like a graphic design agency and observe their work models before trying it yourself would be the safest thing to do and be successful
