Hello Ty! When it comes to expanding your network, don't overlook the one you already have - your friends, teachers, neighbors, family, and colleagues. Begin by discussing your career aspirations with them and see if it brings to mind anyone they might know. Your teachers, in particular, could be a great starting point for seeking connections. They might be able to connect you with valuable resources or individuals from whom you can gain insights and learn.

Hey Ty, it's super important to have crystal clear networking goals (1). No matter if you're aiming for a promotion, hunting for business prospects, or just looking to grow personally, knowing exactly what you want will steer your networking journey in the right direction. Using social media (2) is a fantastic way to broaden your reach; platforms like LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, and Career Village are perfect for showing off your professional side, interacting with colleagues in your field, and sharing useful information. Going to networking events (3) is just as important; these meetups, which can be anything from conferences to seminars to local gatherings, allow you to meet and chat with people who share your interests and experts in your field. This can lead to some really meaningful conversations and connections. Plus, becoming a member of professional organizations (4) in your field gives you the chance to tap into a huge network of professionals, as well as access to events, forums, and resources that make networking in your specific area a breeze.

If you are still in high school, I would recommend finding out what your friends' parents do for a living and asking them if they wouldn't mind sharing about their work, what they do each day and what they like and don't like about it. Another source which many young people might not think about is their teachers. If you have an interest in a particular area, you can ask your teacher more about it and ask them if they know someone else you could talk with in that field. You might also be able to make some new contacts within local sports clubs or volunteer organizations that you are involved with. I primarily used the LinkedIn platform and it's easier (and safer) to link with someone once you had some kind of interaction with them. The other method is through referrals, asking your current contacts if they can refer you to someone else on the platform. Once you go to college, many universities have alumni databases which you can get access to and after you start working your network will increase even more. If you feel nervous about talking with adults or people you just met, just remember that most people love to talk about themselves.
