I found volunteering to be a great way to gain experience to help you reach your career goals. It's a great way to learn about a field you're interested in and also expand your network. As you network with people in your desired profession they can guide you on steps they took to get where they are.

Discovering what truly sparks your interest and passion is a fantastic starting point. If you happen to know someone who's already on the career path you're considering, why not reach out to them? They can share their experiences and give you a real-world perspective. Plus, you can delve into online job postings that align with your interests. These listings can provide a clear picture of the roles and responsibilities, giving you a deeper understanding of the work involved. It's as simple as typing in a few key search terms into your online search engine. For instance, if teaching piques your interest, you could search "Teaching Job responsibilities". Then, take a moment to reflect and ask yourself - Is this the path I want to follow?

Thank you for your question. Many students have similar question. Firstly, you may need to find out what careers you have interest.
Below are my suggestions :
1. Think about what you have interest, e.g. your hobbies, favourite subjects, etc. and identify the related careers
E.g. If you like music, would you like to be a singer, musician, musical artist, music composer, music producer, etc.
If you have interest in Maths, would you like to be an accountant, engineering, banker, financial analyst, maths teacher, etc.
2. Find out more on these careers and determine what you have interest
3. Speak to someone who are working in these careers. Seek guidance from your mentor, school career counsellor, your parents, etc.
4. Shortlist 1-2 careers you would like to pursue
5. Explore the entry criteria of relevant subjects in the college
Hope this helps! Good Luck!

Kristen’s Answer

Think about a career you want to know more about and think you maybe want to work in someday. Get a job, any job in or near that industry. Work hard, be dependable, be flexible, have a good attitude. Be willing to pitch in and help with special projects that introduce you to people and roles outside of where you are working now. Careers are journeys, they are built, one job at a time. Careers do not land in your lap overnight, you go after them and create them. Everything you learn and do is transferable to the next better job. You also learn what you don't want to do again. Some of the best launching pads I have had were to take a temp job as a receptionist. You meet so many people, you learn about the company, you help solve problems, and you are handy and thought of when the next higher opportunity comes along. And the best part is you have a lot of knowledge already about the whole company and who's who, which makes you a strong asset.

Terry’s Answer

That can be a tough question as your aspirations may change over time. To find out what truly interests you, I would encourage someone to join as many groups or organizations as they can to see what fits for them. Once you find that area that interests you, it's now time to focus on it. That could be talking to friends or families that may have someone who knows more about your area. Research what you like and then search for opportunities in your area. Good grades, getting involved and being proactive will take you very far!

Corina’s Answer

You first need to decide what career you want to pursue. You can start by thinking about the things that you are passionate about and what career they fit with. Then you can start getting more information about the career that interests you, try engaging with people that could share their experience with you and provide you with guidance. A good opportunity is also applying for an internship or volunteering in that particular field, if it is possible. This will help you get more insight about the area that you are interested in and will also help you build some connections. Usually this sorts of internships can later be extended to a part-time or full-time job, and from there you can start growing and building your career.

Barb’s Answer

Your first step would be find out what your interests and passions lie. In High school there was a personality type test that I took and it provided possible career choices that seem to align with my interests. My test showed Librarian, Teacher which turned out to be true since I loved going to the library and reading Nancy Drew books. I would start there and narrow down your career field. Best of Luck!!!

Janice’s Answer

While there are numerous strategies to chase your dream career, the initial move is to pinpoint the profession you're passionate about. Say, for instance, you aspire to be an Actor. You could kickstart your journey by getting involved in local community plays or enrolling in drama classes. Essentially, the first step is identifying your career preference, and the second is maintaining solid grades in high school! Here's to your success!
