It took me a while, as i changed my mind several times and even changed studies too. At the end i finished by opportunities doing several jobs in different companies for my first 5 years of work, it was very interesting to understand that at the end i could learn almost everything and change jobs regularly. My last job brought me to Dell being a project Manager and it did suit me perfectly, I have now been with the same company for the past 7 years, i have changed twice jobs. I hope this helps, I would advice you to ask to be a trainee in different companies and jobs so you get the chance to understand it better. But do not worry, professional is full of surprises and you can reconvert at any time if you are curious and willing ! Wishing you the best of luck.

There isn't a specific answer to how long it take. It depends and pretty much phased. At different stage of age you'd properly have different needs & interest. As time goes by, you'll have clearer view of your interest & strength.
Life experience is the new work experience...
Alternatively, there are some interest assessment which can help you identify careers that meet your interests. The assessment usually ask you a series of questions about what you like and what you don't.

I thought about my career from time to time when I was in my primary and secondary school. It may change at different stages as well. And, I considered it more seriously when I have to submit my application to the colleges.
I suggest you could consider approach below :
1. Think about your hobbies and interested that you may consider that you would like to work on something relevant in the future
2. Identify the relevant careers on these hobbies/subjects. E.g. if you are interested in music, would you consider to be a composer, singer, music teacher, etc.
3. Explore more these career and shortlist a few of them that you have interest.
4. Speak to someone who are working in these careers or seek advice from the career counsellor in your school or your parents.
5. Shortlist 1-2 careers you would like to pursue and find out the entry criteria of the relevant majors in the college.
Hope this helps! Good Luck!
