Hi Malia,
Law.com is a great website for anyone in the legal field. It provides insights and career advice. Also you could volunteer at a local law firm and try to get experience there.

Hi Malia!

You are asking a great question! It is definitely a great idea to begin familiarizing yourself with the basics of law and criminal justice, as this will only help you in the future when you are ready to enter law school. Law is a complex and diverse field, and being comfortable with the basics with certainly set you up for success!

There are several ways to grow in knowledge, and maybe even experience, to learn more about law. You can search for local opportunities, for example, some counties run "teen court" programs in their courthouses. It could involve allowing aspiring teenagers to act as "attorneys" for low level nonviolent juvenile cases. This would be a great opportunity for you, if it is offered in your area! You could also ask to shadow some attorneys in your local prosecutor's office, and also see if they offer any internship opportunities. These are some opportunities I've seen in the past, and hopefully you find even more in your community!

Another method to increase your knowledge is to stay tuned to recent news on court cases and new laws being passed. This is a great way to get stay up to date on the law, and also gives you an opportunity to get used to reading laws and statutes. You could also begin researching basic law terms to get used to the terminology and jargon used in the field.

I hope that this answer has been helpful, and I wish you all the best!

Hi Malia,

It’s great that you’re interested in gaining more knowledge of the career you’d like to take in the future.

I have a graduate degree in Criminal Justice. From my experience, this degree gave me the opportunity to think about continuing to taking a Law degree. I was told by the school the I inquired about this that I have to take one more year of law courses and then review for the bar exam. My interest is criminal defense but I am still contemplating.

Moving forward. Depending on your interest and passion, gaining knowledge in these fields means volunteering to the Court and Sheriff’s office. You want to expose your mind to what is out there so you can have option to know which skills you need to improve. In my experience, taking law degree is not only about memorizing the statutes and other law terms. It is understanding them and its branches. The same as Criminal Justice, when you write a policy, you don’t just write a policy because you have to have rules. Before you write you have to explore(research), observe, collect, and analyze data. And then write. In analysis, you don’t only analyze, you have to have a solid evidence. Solid evidence is not only having something in your hand at the moment but to connect this to other branches. What I am trying to say is that, when you say you want to improve your knowledge, you take your common sense in all that you do in law and in criminal justice.

If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to ask me. I do mentoring in Criminal Justice. Good luck, I hope this helps!
