Matthew’s Answer

Hi! I think discipline and knowing how to learn are the two key aspects of being successful when it comes to education. Discipline is really just a byproduct of habit formation. If you make things like studying, asking questions, and having thought provoking discussions a habitual part of your school life, you'll end up being disciplined enough to succeed. Coming onto this website and asking your question is a leap in the right direction!

If you find yourself studying more than the average student, I suggest looking up "learning how to learn". Youtube has some surprisingly great tutorials on proper study methods and techniques. It amazes me how many people I came across that didn't know what study methods worked for them. Many people I met in college thought repetitively writing facts down for hours was the way to study. Only to find out later that they learned much more efficiently and were much more driven by working with classmates. You'd be surprised at how many hundreds of hours you can save yourself by just learning how to learn and finding what study methods work for you. Good luck and keep at it!

Wania,

Here are some key skills I believe you should focus on during your college journey, listed without any specific order:

1. Embrace Curiosity - Make it a goal to absorb as much knowledge as you can, exploring a wide array of subjects. The more you learn, the more well-rounded you become.

2. Master Networking - Step out of your comfort zone, socialize, and establish connections with new people. You never know who might lend a helping hand in the future. Start building your network of contacts right away.

3. Cultivate Drive and Competitiveness - Many young individuals lack the determination and work ethic required to overcome challenges and navigate through difficult times. It's easy to surrender quickly in today's fast-paced world, but that's not the path to success. Distinguish yourself by demonstrating your resilience and commitment to outwork everyone else.

I hope you find this advice useful.

Cheers,
Mike

Dave’s Answer

Staying motivated and making effective use of your resources are two of the biggest metrics and determining factors for student success. Be clear and honest with yourself about why you are pursuing a college education. To succeed, especially when things get challenging, you will need to stay motivated, and to stay motivated, you need to have your own, personal reasons for being a college student. Write your goals down. Think seriously about what you hope to gain from a college experience and how it will impact your future, and don't become overly invested in other people's views or opinions.

Know what resources are available to help aid in your success. Colleges and universities have a wide variety of support systems for students. These include not only academic support like tutoring and supplemental education, but also career development, socio-economic opportunities, and support systems designed to cultivate and maintain general health and wellness.

College is an experience where you will get out of it what you put into it, so make the best use of what your college has to offer.

Sean’s Answer

Indeed, it's been quite a journey for me, but reflecting on it all... Curiosity is key. In essence, the more you broaden your perspective to welcome diverse views, concepts, and learning methods, the higher the chances of uncovering unknown facets of your own self.

Even though the road less traveled might not offer the quickest route to graduation, it could very well be the most rewarding one for you.

Stay relentlessly curious.

Hi Wania,

You are receiving some great advice in the form of answers to your great question. There are skills you want to develop to help you have a successful academic college career. These include:

Studying: very important to "learn" how to study. Tackle the hardest projects first because they will require the most time
Time management: this is probably the most important skill you can learn. Say to yourself: "for the next 45 minutes I will do X". It is too easy to get distracted so stick with it.
Discipline: develop habits that you do everyday: wake up at the same time; study at the same time.

These skills will help you be successful in college and then when you carry them over after graduation, they will help you in life.

Rachel’s Answer

This is a great question! I agree with everything that's been shared and will add a few. The most important is to treat everyone with respect. I know that sounds simple, but being a caring colleague goes a long way. That doesn't mean you are a doormat... (sorry for being blunt). It just means the respect you show the most senior colleague the same as you would to a less senior role. That helps build your reputation and that is ultimately invaluable.

I would also build out some amazing excel skills. No matter the role you are in, those skills will come in handy. My mom showed me a mail merge when I was 15 and it was game-changing. I can save so much time and get to answers quickly with some basic tips and tricks. It also gives you a chance to teach others, including your managers.

Lastly, once you get into the working world, come to the table with solutions, not just problems. It shows people you are thinking about the challenge. They may disagree with your approach (which is ok) but it will show that you are thinking.

Hello! I was once in your shoes, a student, a time filled with exploration and boundless opportunities. This phase can sometimes feel overwhelming, but don't shy away from making tough decisions. Remember, every choice you make is a chance to learn something new and valuable. One crucial skill that will set you apart in the real world is the ability to learn beyond the confines of your syllabus. This can be achieved by connecting with college alumni, participating in college clubs, attending local workshops, or even engaging with digital communities from the comfort of your home. These experiences not only guide your course selections but also equip you with the confidence to ask insightful questions. I'm rooting for you and wishing you nothing but the best!

To me it is:
1. Problem solving: Can you take a problem and structure it? Think about the components and make it simpler and modular to solve?
2. Communication: Can you communicate and voice your ideas and help bring others into it?
3. Ownership: Can you be responsible and take ownership of what you need to do? And keep your manager and leaders updated?
