Katherine’s Answer
Hi Keana,
I’m Katie, a licensed cosmetologist with two years of esthetician experience and a small business owner of a mobile spa in Florida.
Even though I specialize in skin, I used to do hair and still do hair occasionally for family. To answer your question, it depends on if your working status, services offered, and demographics. For instance, are you hourly, commission, or both along with tips? Are you booth renting? How many clients do you have per week? Are you part time or full time? For services, are you / the salon you work at charging based off of state averages for that service or is it charged by time and product? Are you specializing in a treatment? If you specialize in a service, you can charge more for it. For demographics, are you working in an urban or suburban area? Is the place that you work located near stores / malls or is it more isolated?
On average in Florida, a cosmetologist or hair dresser can make $45k-$50k per year. If you specialize in services and are full time 40-45 hours per week, you could make upwards of $75k per year depending on how many clients you have. If you’re a salon or spa owner, you can make $100k per year depending on the services offered.
I hope this helps
