Hello, Kayleigh !

Nurse RNs in a hospital emergency room do a lot.

When a patient comes in they quickly assess the patients' vital signs, judge how urgent the situation is and prioritize and coordinate the patients into bays or rooms. They obtain as much medical history from the patient as possible, so that the right medical decisions can be made. RNs play a vital role in hands on work, too. They can administer medication, do CPR, assist in medical procedures and they can hook people up to ventilators. They keep up to date constantly with the most modern medical equipment and devices.

RNs in an emergency room also clean and dress wounds, they can give stitches and also set broken bones. They know all about the proper sterilization techniques for wound care and can know when a wound is healing properly. They also talk to patients and their families about after care and medication schedule. RN nurses are working together with other professionals so their communication skills must be superb, as well as writing skills as they also write chart records about the patient.

All hospitals pretty much have the same guidelines with some variations based on the individual administration of the individual hospital and State law. I would suggest that you read some RN job descriptions on some employment websites and that should give you a good idea of what hospital emergency room nurses are expected to do. I do hope that this has helped a little and I wish you all the best.

Ronald’s Answer

Emergency Room Nurse basically must know where everything is within the hospital from specialty care to equipment used. Nothing can be not where it needs to be but is never there when you need it too. So dont be surprised if you go look for something and it isnt there. Patients rely on nurses to keep the doctors on point for all their patients. Whether that is tests to be made or drugs to be delivered nurses keep track of everything and anything that goes on for their patients. Nurses are the go between from the patient to the doctor in many ways in the ER. Whether that is pain meds, testing that needs to happen, or just a question that needs to be asked. As a nurse you are not allowed to deliver medications or treatments without a doctors order and that is sometimes fustrating but is the way of nursing in an ER.

Good luk in your endeavours.
