What are low-alcohol beverages that would still attract people to a bar?

with a bit of consideration, i've thought about running my (in later life) coffee shop as a bar by night, but i don't want people to get too intoxicated, because that may ruin the fun of the night. any ideas?

Hey William, interesting question. As I am one to enjoy a good drink every once in a while and my wife does not drink too much yet we both love coffee and a night out on the town, I feel like uniquely qualified to answer this question.

My wife may only have one and with a meal it’s not going to do too much. Especially if it’s a dessert drink as she likes a good espresso martini. That may be up your alley as well. So I can have my 3, she can have her one.

I’d recommend a wine selection, lower on alcohol yet an elevated beverage. For elevation, in Texas anyway, Topo Chico. If you haven’t heard of it, it’s fancy sparkling water. We drink alot of it. It is non alcoholic but can also mix very well. So it’s a must have.

I would recommend keeping the coffee shop open and being able to make your coffee drinks decaf as well. That’s a late night crowd why will drink a few.

Cheers and best of luck.

Hello, William !

Your plan sounds like not only a fun venture but also something that would afford you more hours obtaining paying customers which is a smart business idea. Keep in mind that if you serve any alcohol, you would have to get a liquor license, even if the drinks are lower in alcohol content. Having a liquor license would also limit the age groups of your customers that could patronize your business. They would all have to be 21 or older in your state. That may cut down on possible business from the 18 - 20 crowd, like college students. So consider if you want to do this low alcohol or alcohol free. If you decide to go alcohol free, make it a punch bar - but wait, there's more.

I would like to suggest for you to have the opportunity to have live entertainment and charge admission at your bar. Singers, bands, stand up comics, etc. Nothing large scale, just what your space could accommodate. People would be more apt to say they'd go to see entertainment and not care that there's no or little alcohol served. I would also suggest sectioning one of the walls or areas for local artist's art work - paintings, sketches, etc., like a mini gallery depending on the size of your space and make a co-op arrangement if any of the art sells. That means you get a percentage of the sale because you allowed the artist to "show" in your establishment.

Whatever you decide, I want to encourage you to follow through with this awesome career plan. Best wishes to you !

Hi William! What a very cool bar concept!! I love it. There are many low-ABV options. You can think of options like liqueur, aperitif, and digestif. My best friend is a bartender and she loves Cynar and soda water with a lime wedge. I see you're in Minnesota, where cannabis is legal. There are cannabis beverages you can consider as well. Drinking less alcohol is not only healthy but also becoming quite trendy. I think you're onto something here! Best of luck in your endeavor. And I'm sure in a few hours you'll get some helpful input from others on the platform!
