Hi,
I saw that no one has replied to you yet and I did not want to leave your question unanswered. I will say I know nothing about Fashion Design but always want to learn. I did a little research and found a good website for you:
http://www.collegecrunch.org/advice/how-to-prepare-for-a-career-as-a-fashion-designer/
Here are some highlights of the article:
Courses in mathematics, science and English provide training beyond the course specific knowledge. These courses help develop analytical thinking, problem solving skills and communication skills. Complete courses in technology and computers. Computers have become an essential tool utilized by every field and industry in the current job market. It is important to take home economic courses if they are offered. Home economic courses generally provide basic training in sewing and sometimes pattern making. Knowledge in these areas will be especially important in the fashion design field.
Good luck!

Hi Michelle,
As someone who was in your shoes, trying to figure out what course-work to pursue to begin a career in Fashion Design, I found that several aspects are attractive to universities and design internships:
Art Courses: Take as many types of art courses as possible, mixed media, 3D, 2D, etc. Fashion Design is becoming much more digital as we progress into smart technology and intelligent wearables, however, there is still something to be said for hand sketching and gathering creativity across many mediums of art. It also helps to have a great idea of how to portray the human body, as fashion typically revolves around wearable garments. Art classes are a great way to better understand and to better express the human form and figure.
Graphic Design/ AutoCAD/ Adobe Creative Suite: If your school offers these courses, you will be in a fantastic position to be able to show off not only hand sketches but digital ones too! Companies and Universities love to see versatility in a portfolio and showing that you are proficient or even excel in both of these types of design is a major plus.
Business Classes: Being a successful fashion designer means you've got to be a self starter, having a bit of business acumen in your repertoire so that you can self promote and be able to run your own business to start your career is a must. Plus, it is a great idea to have a better scope of the industry and a BIG portion of the Fashion Industry, is business!
Those are just a few, but they should be a great start for you on your path! Good luck!

Hi Michelle,
I did not major in Fashion Design, but my daughter did. She took many art courses in high school which helped her a great deal - fashion design is drawing so art classes should help you a lot!
